Indian Dress Code and Outfit Details

Attire: Bollywood Glamour

Women

A lehenga or a saree are the two most common options:

A lehenga is a 2-piece outfit that includes a top with a full, high-waisted skirt.

A saree is a long piece of fabric, often made of silk, that is wrapped around the body. A blouse and slip (petticoat) are worn underneath (typically cropped but does not have to be).

Flowy Anarkali suits or embroidered kurtas are also fun options. You can also opt for an Indo-Western gown with Indian-inspired details

ALSO

If you have never worn a saree, they can be tricky to put on. Pre-draped/ pre-pleated sarees are an option as well. (We have a few pre-draped ones up for grabs if you want pics let us know!)

Lehengas can get heavy quickly. Look for organza or other light fabrics without too much embellishment.

Men

A kurta or a sherwani are the two most common options

A kurta is considered semi-formal or casual; it is a versatile tunic-style garment made from various fabrics like cotton or silk and typically reaches around the knees.

Colorful kurtas with churidar (slim drawstring pants) are always a good bet; vibrant, lightweight kurtas with straight-fit cotton pants or linen suits would be ideal. Kurtas usually come as a set with the churidar.

Colors

Color means everything at Hindu wedding celebrations - the more vibrant the color palette, the better. When picking your outfit, bright hues are encouraged - the most essential part of the dress code for an Indian wedding is to wear color.

Do: Bright, festive color is always in style for an Indian wedding - stick to pastels during the daytime and jewel tones at night

Don’t: Avoid wearing red (typically, bridal color) or plain white or plain black (inauspicious) for ceremonies

Fabrics

Choose comfort above all else. Find something that will let you move around comfortably the whole night

Embrace light, breathable fabrics that offer comfort and elegance outdoors in the Mediterranean climate. Opt for light and airy fabrics such as linen, cotton, chiffon, and silk and vibrant or pastel colors with flowy silhouettes
